NJ 9/11 Memorial "Empty Sky"

Dedicated to the NJ victims of the 9/11 attacks, this memorial is located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City at the mouth of the Hudson River across from the World Trade Center site. The memorial includes twin walls set within a sloped mound of earth, anchored by a granite path that projects towards Ground Zero. Fabrication, finishing and installation of the two 30-foot high rectangular towers was done by Crystal Metalworks in collaboration with Great Lakes Etching & Finishing. The stainless walls stretch 208 feet long and have 746 victims' names etched in 4-inch letters. The project won the Global Design Award in 2012 from the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) and the National Ornamental & Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA) Top Job Award.

Renovation of existing structure built in the 1800s. The job had a number of interesting technical challenges including: shoring the historic facade so the roof could be removed, testing the structural stability of the existing structure, custom designing connections between new steel and the "antique" existing structure, custom fabricating 20' deep trusses which were installed 150 feet in the air, and extremely large beams (e.g. W36x395 x 65') which had to be installed from inside the structure.

The Historic Virginia State Capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson, was completely renovated including the addition of an underground visitors center and office complex. The Commonwealth of VA was represented by URS. Crystal Steel's work was featured in Virginia Architect's Magazine as well as winning an award from Gilbane Building Co.
