Crystal Steel opens engineering center in Manila

Crystal Steel Fabricators, Inc., a leading provider of structural and miscellaneous fabricated steel to the Mid-Atlantic Region, today announced the opening of a wholly owned engineering center in Manila, the Philippines.

"A fabricator needs to be able to control the quality and timeliness of its shop drawings," said Bill Lo, President of Crystal Steel. "Establishing this center will allow us to do just that."

Crystal Steel has been doing its own shop details since it opened in 1992. Historically detailing was completed by people onsite in Delmar and walked over to the fabrication shop.

"By establishing a presence off-shore, we gain access to a large pool of talented people at a greatly reduced cost, but it requires a new set of skills, procedures and infrastructure for communication that we have never had to address previously when we were all under one roof," said Jeff Urdan, a Vice-President at Crystal.

The center in Manila will open as strictly a detailing center, but over time will take on additional administrative tasks such as material take-offs, purchasing, order follow-up and possibly even accounting.

"We believe that over time we will have not only a sustainable cost advantage versus competitors who detail in the US, but equally important we will have an advantage in speed of detail preparation and reaction to changes due to the broad and deep talent pool available in Manila which is not available here in Delmar," said Lo.

Crystal Steel Fabricators, Inc. is a privately held, structural steel fabricator based in Delmar, DE. Founded in 1992, it has developed a reputation for client service, quality fabrication and on-time delivery that is unrivaled in the Mid-Atlantic region. It is an AISC certified fabricator, certified Minority Business Enterprise in multiple domains and has earned major national contractors such as Whiting-Turner, Bovis Lend Lease, Turner Construction, Clark Construction and Gilbane Building Co. among its clients.
