NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On Wednesday morning, Mayor Karl Dean led a “topping out” ceremony at the new West Riverfront Park Amphitheater construction site.
A ceremonial final beam was placed atop the highest point of the newly erected steel structure, signifying the completion of the frame of the building and a mid-point in construction.
Ballou High School in Southeast DC is the site of a 2,400 ton “design assist” project. Crystal Steel meets bi-weekly with design team members to identify Value Engineering opportunities and strategies for ease of fabrication, constructability and performance to schedule. The design features significant truss work, support for undulating curtain walls, and leans heavily on Crystal Steel’s technology team to support the fast-track BIM process which will enable significant parts of this large job to be open to students less than 9 months from initiation. The design assist process allowed Crystal Steel to begin deliveries of steel within 8 weeks of 100% construction documents.
Dunbar high school, an iconic institution which trained many of the city greatest leaders, underwent a 1,200 ton renovation and expansion project. After years of working together on smaller jobs, Crystal Steel’s mentorship relationship with Creation Iron, a DC based CBE contractor, joined the big leagues as they worked together on a Gilbane / Smoot, multi-million dollar project. Creation performed to the expected standard, delivering a successful job which delivering a successful job on time.
Crystal Steel Fabricators brought new life to an Arlington, TN-based structural and Misc metals fabricator by bringing it into the Crystal Steel network as Crystal Steel Memphis. The plant adds an additional 8,000 tons of structural capacity per year, miscellaneous metals and the ability to support customers throughout the South East and South Central United States.
A triumph 5 years in the making, and the closeout of a nearly $20 million contract, will end 2013 with a bang as Crystal Steel puts the finishing touches on its erection of structural steel and miscellaneous metals for the Washington DC Metro system's Silver line expansion toward Dulles Airport. The 6 stations, originally planned as only 5, were constructed on a fast track with close coordination between fabricator, erector and design team. Working in tight sites, often in the middle of highly active freeways, the project was a logistical and safety challenge. Crystal Steel and S&R Erectors were up to the challenge.
